What is a Flexible Automatic Packaging Machine
A flexible automatic packaging machine is an automated system designed to feed, identify, pick and pack different products with minimal mechanical changeover. Combining flexible feeding, machine vision and robotics, these systems are particularly effective for automatically bagging small parts and components with varying shapes, sizes and orientations.
Unlike conventional automatic bagging machines that rely on dedicated tooling for a specific product, a flexible system can adapt to different components through software, vision and programmable robotic handling.
Key Benefits at a Glance
High-Mix, Low-Volume Production: Seamlessly switch between different components via software profiles without manual mechanical retooling.
Reduced Labor Costs: Eliminates manual counting, loading, and heat sealing.
Gentle Part Handling: Ideal for delicate, sensitive, or irregularly shaped industrial components.
These machines are perfect for industries that need versatility, like electronics, pharmaceuticals, plastic molded parts or small mechanical parts.
How Does a Flexible Automatic Packaging Machine Work?
A flexible automatic packaging or bagging system brings several processes together within one automated solution. Components are presented by a feeding system, identified by machine vision, picked by a robot and transferred into a bag before sealing and discharge.
Here’s a step-by-step breakdown process:
1. Parts Feeding via Flexible Feeder & Vision Inspection
Component parts are loaded into a flexible feeder (such as the RNA FlexCube™), which uses controlled vibration to separate and distribute parts across a flat presentation surface.
An integrated machine vision system identifies each component and determines its position and orientation. The vision system sends this information to the robot, allowing suitable parts to be selected even when they are randomly presented on the feeder surface.
2. Robotic Pick and Place
A delta or 6-axis robot picks identified components using application-specific grippers or end-of-arm tooling. The robot transfers each component from the feeder to the automatic bagging machine, providing controlled handling throughout the process.
3. Automatic Bag Feeding and Opening
Pre-made bags or film rolls are fed into the machine. For pre-made bags, a mechanism (e.g., suction cups or grippers) picks and opens the bag mouth. For form-fill-seal (FFS) machines, flat plastic film is formed into a bag using heat sealing and shaping tools.
✅ In some systems, a bag opening mechanism uses support plates and cylinders to keep the bag open during filling, preventing material spillage.
4. Product Insertion (Bag Filling)
In the bag filling process of an automatic flexible bagging machine, a robotic arm or an alternative dispensing system carefully places the picked parts into an open bag, ensuring precise and efficient loading. For discrete parts, such as screws, medical devices, or similar items, the robotic placement is particularly critical to guarantee accurate and consistent filling.
✅ This automated approach:
Enhances speed and accuracy in bag filling.
Adapts to different product types via software adjustments.
Accommodates varying shapes, sizes, or quantities without mechanical changes.
5. Bag Sealing
Once filled, the bag moves to a sealing station.
✅ Sealing methods include:
Heat sealing (for plastic bags).
Ultrasonic sealing (for specialty materials).
6. Bag Discharge and Optional Palletizing
The sealed bag is dropped onto an exit conveyor or container. Optional downstream automation, such as secondary robotic packing or palletizing, can automatically place finished bags into cardboard shipping cartons.

Why Use a Flexible Automatic Packaging Machine?
Greater Product Flexibility A flexible system can be configured for multiple products rather than being mechanically dedicated to a single component. Product changes can often be managed through recipes, vision settings and robotic programs.
Faster Product Changeovers Reducing dedicated mechanical tooling can shorten the time required to switch between components, making flexible packaging systems particularly suitable for high-mix manufacturing and small-batch production.
Automated Handling of Small and Irregular Parts Combining flexible feeding with machine vision allows randomly presented components to be located and picked individually, making the technology suitable for complex or irregularly shaped parts.
Reduced Manual Handling Automating feeding, picking, filling and bagging reduces repetitive manual handling and allows operators to focus on higher-value production activities.
Controlled Product Handling Robotic handling provides controlled movement between feeding and packaging operations. Grippers and process parameters can be designed around delicate, cosmetic or precision components to minimize unnecessary product contact and damage.
What Products Can Be Automatically Bagged?
Flexible automatic packaging machine can be used for a wide range of discrete manufactured components.
Small parts create particular challenges for automated packaging. Components may overlap, become entangled, arrive in random orientations or be difficult to separate reliably before packaging.
A flexible automatic bagging machine for small parts addresses these challenges by separating product presentation from product recognition.
The flexible feeder presents components across a controlled surface, machine vision identifies suitable parts, and the robot picks them individually before placing them into the bag. This makes the process less dependent on dedicated mechanical orientation tooling.
For manufacturers producing multiple component variants, this approach can also provide greater flexibility when products or production requirements change.
